It’s time to get out those sneakers.  The second annual Walk for Cancer Care is approaching.  It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mount Forest Sports Complex Walking Track.

The Walk for Cancer Care Committee was formed in 2009 to raise money for both Cancer Patient Services and the Oncology department at Louise Marshall Hospital.  Since almost everyone knows someone who has used these services, there was an overwhelming response to the first event held last Oct. 3.  Last year 175 walkers raised over $25,000. Sponsors chose which group they wished to sponsor, and it was almost an even split between the two.

To get involved in this fun-filled day, enroll a team of six or more enthusiastic walkers from your business, club, families or neighbours.  Apparently, King St. East neighbours are entering a team this year.  Each participant gets a pledge sheet to collect pledges.  One member of the team must be on the track at all times.  Spice things up a bit by getting special team t-shirts, or wear something unique like the Red Hats who participated last year.  Pledge sheets are available at Jim’s Barber Shop, The Confederate office, or The Thrift Shop.

Cancer Patient Services Corp. will provide a delicious lunch to all the walkers at no cost.  Also provided will be coffee, water and other goodies to keep the energy of those participating up.  Music by local talent will provide entertainment for the walkers.

If you are unable to participate that day, consider sponsoring someone, or buy a luminary for $5 at various locations around town.  The luminaries are plastic glasses with a light inside.  Write heartfelt encouragement for someone you know who has cancer, or write a message in memory of a loved one.  Last year, the sports teams on the ice spelled HOPE with the luminaries.  Everyone held a luminary during the last lap, led by a piper.  It was a very moving experience.

The committee has met several times in the last few months to make this year’s event even bigger and better.
Caring about family, friends and neighbours who live with cancer make Walk For Cancer Care a very worthwhile cause.   For more information call Ruth Penwarden, committee chair, at 519-323-3980 or 519-323-9494 ext 3017.
