Response to the Alzheimer Society's 2010 Manulife Walk for Memories at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex was overwhelming.? Jim Tye, President of the Board of Directors for the Guelph-Wellington Alzheimer Society couldn't contain his excitement as he announced the resounding success of the Saturday morning fundraiser.
With almost 30 participants, including residents and volunteers at the Saugeen Valley Nursing Center, the event surpassed its goal of $10,000 by earning $11,246.50.
Combined with the total from the Guelph event, the grand total was an impressive $46,000 -- exceeding last year's total of $30,000.? "I'm blown away," said Mr. Tye. "I'm speechless!"? Mr. Tye acknowledged that dementia's awareness is increasing, which results in increased support.?"Everyone you talk to (has) someone affected," he said, "a spouse, a parent, a grandparent."? The event provides funds for the various patient and caregiver activities, including group programs that offer much needed encouragement to those closest to the Alzheimer patient - the spouse and children.? It is estimated the number of cases diagnosed with quadruple in the next 10 years as baby boomers age. ? Following Saturday morning’s walk, participants enjoyed refreshments, quality time with other teams and entertainment by a live band. Prizes and t-shirts added a festive air to the event, and gave everyone a chance to enjoy their philanthropic efforts.?
