"Peg said’ ‘Let's do the walk, Mom’,” says Muriel Morrison, recalling what prompted her family to participate in the 2010 Manulife Walk for Memories.? A key fundraising event for the Alzheimer Society, the walk saw the family of Art Morrison, formerly of Arthur and now a resident of the Saugeen Valley Nursing Center in Mount Forest, band together for a second year with neighbors to form "Art's Girls" and gather the most group pledges at over $2,600.? Mrs. Morrison, along with daughters Peggy, Nancy, and Betty Anne, sported white shirts with their team name in bright red letters, featuring Art's smiling face from a time before the dementia made it necessary for him to leave his home. He was a well-known and well- loved father, husband, friend and neighbor, gathering more friends wherever he went in his travels as a truck driver. He loved his racehorses and farming, not to mention his time puttering in the garden.? The grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather of three finally relocated to a care facility a year and a half ago when the disease progressed to the point his wife of 58 years could no longer care for him at home. The illness was a slow progression, and Mrs. Morrison is grateful it came later on in life. ? "You always have to look at the positive," she said, adding that her husband made dealing with Alzheimer's easier with his humor. When he couldn't remember a friend's name, he would playfully ask her who it was and then add, "What is the name of (the disease) what I have?"? "I knew what was coming and so did he," said Mrs. Morrison. "We talked about it. He could see himself slowly declining."? "I told him 'I will keep you home as long as I can’," she said. "And that day came when I said, ‘That's it’."? Support groups receive funding through the Alzheimer Society thanks to the proceeds of events such as the Walk For Memories and those have benefited Mrs. Morrison. Her daughters have benefited from literature from the Alzheimer Society, which is also supported through the Walk funds. ? "You are with people, I think it's healthy," Mrs. Morrison says, referring to the group programs that allow family and caregivers of Alzheimer patients an environment to share and support each other.?
