With only one weekend of regular season action left to go in the Western Jr. C season, the Mount Forest Patriots remain one point ahead of the last-place Goderich Sailors.
The Pats did little to help their cause this past weekend, as they fell 6-2 in Wingham on Friday, and were silenced 7-0 at home by Kincardine. Mount Forest rounds out their 2009/10 campaign with a home game against Goderich on Friday, and a Saturday visit to Kincardine.
The Ironmen enjoyed a quick 2-0 lead on Friday, until Mount Forest’s Chris Zubac scored, unassisted, midway through the first period. Zubac then set up a tying tally in the second, helping Justin Ainslie to the 2-2 goal at the 4:21 mark.
It was all Wingham from that point on, however, as the home side retook the lead seconds later and added a 4-2 powerplay goal before the second intermission. Two more unanswered goals in the third period effectively gift wrapped the Ironmen win.
Kincardine feasted on Mount Forest one night later, and Ben Davis wound up with plenty of greens in his diet by the end of a 7-0 rout. The Normanby native scored two goals to open the game, and assisted on a third to lift the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead.
Ahead 4-0 entering the third frame, the Ayton connection continued to catch fire. Davis drained his second powerplay goal of the game, for a dominant four-point night, and fellow Normanby alumnus David Culliton set up the 7-0 clincher.
Mount Forest mustered only 11 shots, as penalty trouble and five Kincardine powerplay goals crippled the Patriot momentum.
