Once again dodging raindrops and completing a full slate of games at the Cork St. soccer pitches, Mount Forest and District Soccer Club crowned its 2010 Under-20 and Under-12 champions on the weekend.
Six teams laced up to determine the Lakeshore Soccer League’s Under-20 boys playoff championship on Saturday, with Kincardine taking the gold in a 6-0 rout over Walkerton, and Mount Forest edging Tara 1-0 in the bronze medal game.
Kincardine led pool A after a 6-0 drubbing of Tara and a 1-1 tie with Durham, while Tara did manage a 5-2 victory over Durham. In pool B, Mount Forest nipped Saugeen Shores 1-0 and lost 1-0 to Walkerton. Saugeen Shores tied Walkerton 1-1 to round out the tight pool.
Mount Forest, owning second place in the league for much of the year, orchestrated a valiant finish to their season. With one sub on their short bench, the home side overcame the heat and some tired legs to win their final game of the tourney.
As dark clouds cloistered on the horizon, Cody Sterritt did some exceptional work deep in the corner, and crossed the ball in front to Simon Pennings, who scored the game winning goal. Head Coach Frank MacLean described his team as a great group of players, and a pleasure to coach this season.
Mount Forest and District Soccer Club saw Phoenix top the regular season in Under-12 action with 29 points. Right in the thick of it only a point behind were Royal LePage, Wellington North Tire and Cedarwell, all three finalists in Sunday’s championship games.
Eight Under-12 teams gave it their all on Saturday and Sunday, with Royal LePage taking first place in the playoff tournament thanks to a 3-0 shutout over Coldwell Banker. Cedarwell edged Wellington North Tire for third place, with a tight 2-1 shootout victory.
Royal LePage opened the tourney with an 8-1 romp over Hanover Rotary, and Reeves Construction followed along with a 6-0 shutout over Mike’s Auto Parts. Phoenix clipped Wellington North Tire 3-2, and Coldwell Banker was even closer with a 5-4 shootout triumph over Cedarwell.
On the consolation side, the Tire contingent rolled over Hanover 6-1, and Cedarwell stopped Mike’s Auto 4-1. Wellington North Tire doubled Reeves 4-2 in their semi-final, and Cedarwell inched past Phoenix 2-1 in the other semi.
The championship bracket saw Royal lePage silence Phoenix 2-0 in semi-final action, while Coldwell cooled Reeves with a 5-4 shootout win in their semi-final to set up the final.
